The team behind the optofluidic Deformable Phase Plate has won EXIST Transfer of Research funding, after a pitch before an international jury of experts. The grant is the bridge between a laboratory prototype and a company: it pays for the development work that proves a research result can be built reliably, and for the preparations to found the start-up that will sell it.
What the grant is for
EXIST Transfer of Research is aimed at research-based start-up projects whose development is expensive and technically risky — the position of a wavefront modulator that has worked on one bench and now has to become a product. It is a program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF). The application was supported by the Founder’s Office of the University of Freiburg, which advises scientists who want to turn a result into a company.
